As a future physician, I have always set goals for myself and I have always tried to make a clear pathway for myself. In becoming a physician, one must know that it is not only a job but a lifelong commitment to learning, empathy, and service. As a learner pursuing my MD, I strive to learn something new everyday specifically about culture. When one is more in touch with culture, it allows you to understand how each person may act when it comes to Medicine. For example, my grandparents immigrated from Guyana over 40 years ago but they are still skeptical in taking different medications such as tylenol when they get sick and often turn towards more holistic points of views. This also goes into Guyanese and Indian culture more so, as they often turn towards more holistic remedies instead of the typical medicine. However, as a learning MD I believe it is important for me to understand how each culture significantly plays roles in medicine. Additionally, religion also plays a grand role when it comes to medicine as how someone acts and behaves during different medical treatments. I not only I want to be someone who not only seeks medical knowledge but also understand how each person is completely different and therefore will have different reactions to each thing. I aim to understand not only the numerous amounts of medical content to ensure the safety and wellbeing of my patients but also I aim to learn how each individual’s different identities, (cultural, beliefs, and values) influence their experience of illness and healing. I want to understand this so I can provide care that is not only clinically sound, but also deeply respectful and personalized.
